Hospice Choices
Peg arrived late last night.
We slept(-ish) in dad’s room alongside the bed and he was breathing comfortably without the gurgling that had been so much of his existence for the last seven weeks. And he slept almost continuously from about 1pm till 6am with rousing breaks while his bottom was being cleaned up.
In another two hours the last of the current container of nutrition will be infused and that will be the end of flues for him No meds are being given. The nursing staff has asked him if he understands what’s happening and the transitional events going on around him and he was clear in knowing, understanding and being at peace with them.
Peg and I met with hospice, we made some end-of-life choices and tomorrow (Tuesday) he will move to an inpatient hospice center that is the best we can find for him, and also the most home-like. We do not think he will mind that it is not 519 Independence — the comfort and setting, the people, and the views will be as parklike as looking out his living room window — without letting him feel as if he is on display in the livingroom. We are trying to assure that he achieves as much dignity and comfort as possible.
Tonight we will remain with him here at the hospital. Once at hospice we’ll continue to give him comfort, companionship and care.
Thank all of you for your prayers and concern.
