Thursday Transfusions

I got Frank shaved  again this morning.  We read a few cards, late birthdays and get-well. Our least favorite nurse was on again, Shelly (Michelle) but I spent some time at the beginning of the day to try winning her over a little; thereafter she seemed a little less antagonistic. I don’t know how much time the think they are saving by leaving a bp cuff on for an hour when they get called away. Those things aren’t comfortable when needed, leaving them on for a long while doesn’t do anything for patient morale. Two units of blood today.  He had another bloody stool.  The last couple were just a little bit of blood — this one was heavier red.  So – two units of blood.  Just a couple doctors rounded while I was there.  A new guy from Grehan’s office — better than the one yesterday.Had a couple more conversations with Nicole (the social worker).  At the beginning of the day dad was really conversant and had a little bit more volume — not much but a little. Actually, at one point I was thinking to myself that this was pretty unusual even for a healthy Frank.  I only wish I could have understood more.He was saying that he’d like to have his whole family with him, but we talked about how far Fred and Lisa and Kathy and Troy and Sydney are, about Mike and Katy and Mel having been here just a couple days ago.  I was a little worried about whether he was wanting to have people around to say good by, but after talking with Nicole she spend some time withhim — she has a lot more experience dealing with people in dad’s condition and she was certain that it was just a function of his depression – thinking that familiar faces would be encouraging…. After all, he’s been in there for more than 6 weeks now.I’m a bit concerned about this fistula surgery.  I am not getting an answer about whether it’s done under local or general anesthetic.  I’m hoping he’s going to be strong enough to handle the stress.  Sounds as if he may be able to leave the following day if everyone will sign off on him. No one is particularly concerned about it. I found his Long Term Care insurance papers and had to send off a copy of his POA so that they could tell me what kind of coverage he has in case we need to worry about something beyond his stay at Arbors of Sylvania.
